A letter to everyone who supports an athleteâby blood, by choice, by love.
I used to think I was living in someone else's shadow. The way you might not notice you're playing a smaller role until you see yourself from the outsideâcheering from the sidelines, driving to tournaments, listening to the same story about the same submission for the hundredth time, and thinking: is this enough? Am I enough?
Then I realized something. I'm not in a shadow. I am the bright spot when everything goes dark.
When you watch a BJJ competitor walk into a tournament, you see one person on the mat. What you don't see is the architecture that made that moment possible.
You don't see the mother who woke up at 5 AM for years to get her kid to practice. You don't see the wife who learned enough about BJJ to actually understand why her husband needs thisânot just tolerate it, but get it. You don't see the girlfriend who rearranged her life so his schedule worked. You don't see the friend who listened, believed, and showed up even though they don't train.
You don't see the women athletes training just as hard, spotting their teammates, celebrating wins like they're their own. You don't see the athletes who lift each other up, who are each other's biggest supporters off the mat.
You don't see any of them. But they're the reason heâor sheâwalks in confident.
Here's what took me a while to understand: this work doesn't get recognition because recognition isn't the point.
We support because we love. We show up because someone we care about is chasing something that matters to them. We do it without a scoreboard keeping track, without an audience, without the expectation of applause. We do it because the alternativeânot showing upâwould be betraying something fundamental about how we care.
That doesn't make it invisible. It makes it foundational.
The support system in the BJJ community is the reason athletes can train hard without worrying about logistics. It's why they can compete with confidence instead of carrying the weight of doing it alone. It's why they come home to someone who gets it, believes in it, and will be there tomorrow.
That's not a shadow. That's the whole structure.
To the parents: You didn't just drive your kids to practice. You taught them what it means to show up, to commit, to chase something difficult. You modeled what unconditional support looks like. Your child will carry that with them forever.
To the wives and girlfriends: You chose to make space for this. You learned the language, understood the sacrifice, and believed in something that wasn't even yours to begin withâbecause it mattered to someone you loved. That's a form of love most people never experience.
To the families and friends: You showed up even when you didn't fully understand. You asked questions, you listened, you made it work. You proved that you don't have to train to be part of this community.
To the women athletes: You're on the mat doing the same work. You're pushing yourselves and your teammates. You're proving that this space is for everyone.
To the athletes supporting athletes: You know better than anyone what it takes. You celebrate your teammates' wins like they're your own. You hold space for each other's struggles. You are the heart of this community.
Mother's Day can feel complicated if your role doesn't fit neatly into that category. But I think the point of Mother's Dayâat least the version I believe inâis honoring the people who mother. Who show up. Who sacrifice. Who love someone into becoming their best self.
That includes biological mothers. It also includes the wife who mothers the household so her partner can focus on their goals. The girlfriend who mothers the emotional side of a relationship that needs that stability. The friend who mothers by listening. The teammate who mothers by believing.
This is for all of you.
I want to be direct about something: this work is hard. It's often thankless. It's easy to feel small when you're the one holding the logistics while someone else gets the platform. It's easy to wonder if your contribution matters when it doesn't show up in the photos or the stats or the tournament results.
But it matters. You matter.
You are not the background. You are not the shadow. You are the bright spot that makes everything else possible. You are the reason they can shine.
So on Mother's Day, and on every ordinary Tuesday after that: I see you. We see each other.
Keep going. Keep supporting. Keep being the foundation that holds this community up. Keep being the person who says "you've got this" on the hard days and the loudest cheerleader on the victory days. You are everything.
Happy Mother's Day to everyone who supports an athleteâby blood, by choice, by love.
The BJJ community wouldn't exist without you.
Our Kids Summer Program is officially in full swing, and the energy inside the gym has been amazing.
This yearâs batch has been a fun mix of returning students and brand new faces. Some of the kids came back with skills they remembered from last year, while others are stepping onto the mats for the very first time. Weâve also been happy to see more families from San Pedro and Binan checking out the program and joining the NorthSouth community.
One of the best parts of every new season is welcoming our alumni back.
Thereâs something special about seeing kids return after a year away. Some are taller, more confident, and noticeably more mature. Itâs a reminder that growth happens quickly, and itâs rewarding to watch them continue their journey with us.
The classes lately have been full of movement, laughter, and learning. Honestly, there are so many kids right now that the coaches are definitely being kept busy in the best way possible.
A moment that always stands out is seeing parents watch from the side with pride as their children learn new skills, follow instructions, and enjoy themselves. Many parents tell us after class that their kids had fun, and that matters a lot to us.
We believe martial arts gives children more than just exercise.
Yes, they move, sweat, and stay active. But beyond fitness, kids also learn discipline, respect, and how to be around peers in a healthy environment. They get time away from gadgets, screens, and distractions and instead spend time learning, playing, and building confidence the old-fashioned way.
Thatâs something many of us grew up with, and it still matters today.
To all the parents who chose to spend part of your childâs summer with our team, thank you for trusting us. Weâre happy to have your kids with us and we hope they leave each class feeling stronger, happier, and more confident.
Enrollment is still open until May, and new students are still welcome to join.

Training is about more than techniques on the mats.
It is also about responsibility, preparedness, and taking care of the people who trust us with their time, training, and families.
That is why our management, coaches, and staff recently completed a First Aid Seminar led by Dr. Ryan Ignacio.
This was something we had planned for a while, and when schedules finally lined up, we made sure it happened. We have always believed that preparation matters, especially when it comes to unforeseen situations.
The seminar covered practical first response skills and how to stay calm during emergencies. One of the biggest takeaways for our team was simple but important:
Knowing what to do in the moment can make a huge difference.
In many situations, people freeze because they are unsure how to respond. Training helps remove that hesitation. Practice builds confidence, and confidence leads to quicker, better action when it matters most.
For us, this connects directly to our values as a gym.
We talk often about discipline and consistency in training. Those same values should also apply off the mats. Being prepared, staying calm, and continuing to learn are all part of becoming a better coach, teammate, and organization.
We hope our members and parents feel reassured knowing that safety and preparedness are priorities for us.
While we never hope to use these skills, we believe it is always better to have them and be ready than to need them and not know what to do.
Thank you to Dr. Ryan Ignacio for sharing his time and knowledge with the NorthSouth team.
We will continue doing our best to grow not only in skill, but in service to our community.

This past weekend (Sept 20-21, 2025) was a special one for the NorthSouth community. Our team showed up on two fronts â at the National Jiu-Jitsu Tournament and at the Calambato Judo Tournament in Calamba, Laguna.
Both kids and adults stepped on the mats, giving their best in every match. Weâre proud to share that our competitors took home medals, but more importantly, valuable lessons and experiences that only competition can bring.
As with every tournament, there were highs and lows. Some tough matches didnât go our way, while others showcased the hard work and grit our athletes put in during training. Through it all, one thing was clear â our NorthSouth family has heart.
The kids especially shined in Calamba, showing discipline, skill, and sportsmanship beyond their years. For many, it was their first taste of competition, and they handled the challenge with courage.
None of this would be possible without the constant support of our families and community. Every cheer, ride, meal shared, and word of encouragement fuels our athletes and keeps the team spirit alive. These wins and experiences are not just for the individual â theyâre for all of us.
We head back to the gym motivated, inspired, and ready to keep improving. The mats are where we grow, and weekends like this remind us why we do what we do.
Hereâs to more tournaments, more growth, and more moments together as one team.Â
See you on the mats

NorthSouth Fight Sports proudly celebrates the impressive debut of Kevin Villacourte, who represented our team at the Marianas Pro Manila 2025 held last April 5â6, 2025 at Festival Mall, Alabang.
Competing in the Adults -76kg division for both Gi and No-Gi, Kevin took home bronze in the Gi division and secured gold in the No-Gi divisionâan incredible achievement for his first-ever Jiu-Jitsu competition as a white belt.
In the No-Gi division, Kevin dominated with two submission victoriesâone via Ezekiel choke and the other via guillotine chokeâdemonstrating both technical skill and composure under pressure.
Reflecting on his experience, Kevin shared, âI felt that all my hard work had validation. I learned a lot about myself and about BJJ as well, and while learning these things, I realized that Iâm just scraping the tip of the iceberg.â
On competition day, Kevin admitted that nerves played a part. âOn the first day of the competition, not gonna lie, I felt nervous. But on the second day, the only thing I felt was that I needed to redeem myself from the loss on the first day. The plan was to just do what I practiced and listen to the instruction of Coach Brendo.â
Kevinâs preparation leading up to the tournament was intense and disciplined. âI did what Coach Brendo said. He told me to train at least 5-8 times a week, and so I did that. I also lifted weights until two weeks before the competition. Diet was heavier than usual since I was losing weight rapidlyâI had to eat four meals and two snacks to maintain 72kg.â
When asked about his biggest challenge, Kevin opened up about the mental battle. âThe most challenging part was not the competition nor the training, it was to believe in myself that I had what it took to win. It was the hardest because you wonât know until you get called to step on the mats. Since I had doubts, there was a big reliance on Coach to lift me up. I would say I didnât really overcome it, but with the help of people around me, especially my wife and Coach, it made it easier to go through it.â
As for his biggest takeaway, Kevin offered wise advice: âThe biggest takeaway from this is to just show up. Whether itâs a good or bad practice, whether you understood the lesson or not, just show up. The next step would be to compete again and see what needs improvement.â
Coach Brendo praised Kevinâs dedication and performance, noting, âKevinâs hard work and determination really showed on the mats. Winning gold in No-Gi with two submissions at his first competition is an outstanding achievement. Weâre all excited to see how far he can go.â
Kevinâs success at Marianas Pro Manila marks the start of an exciting journey. At North-South Fight Sports, we are proud to support athletes like Kevin, who embody the spirit of discipline, perseverance, and constant growth.
Congratulations, Kevin! Your NorthSouth Fight Sports family is behind you all the way. On to the next!

A Heartfelt Start
We began each morning with a quick prayer, expressing our gratitude for the opportunity to create a space for fitness, learning, and connection. This set the tone for a meaningful and exciting weekend ahead. To keep everyone energized, refreshments were served throughout the day, adding to the welcoming and festive atmosphere.
Free Classes for All
To showcase the variety of disciplines we offer, we hosted an array of free classes that brought together participants of all skill levels. From calming yoga sessions to adrenaline-pumping boxing and muay thai, there was something for everyone. The highlight for many was the BJJ open mats, where over 60 grapplers came together to share techniques, roll, and build friendships. The turnout was beyond what we could have hoped for, reflecting the strength and support of our growing community.

The weekend wasnât just about physical activityâit was about forming connections. Participants bonded over shared experiences, learning new skills, and encouraging one another. by Rio Christine Anonuevo (Oct 2024)
Before I met my husband, Jiujitsu was an unfamiliar sport to me. Growing up, like many, I was familiar with common sports such as Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, and Basketball, to name a few. But Jiujitsu? Who even practiced Jiujitsu back then? It wasnât the kind of sport youâd easily find at school or in the local gym in the early 2000s
That changed when I met my husband. I watched him dedicate countless hours to Jiujitsu. He wasnât just attending one class a day; he was doing two, sometimes even more, and would schedule our dates around his BJJ sessions. I distinctly remember asking him early on in our relationship, back in 2017, âAno bang meron diyan sa Jiujitsu?â His go-to answer was, âMasaya ako sa Jiujitsu. It changed my life.â
From then on, I couldnât help but wonder: What is it about this sport?
Â
Over time, I found myself watching training sessions, attending competitions, and even joining belt promotions and general assemblies. I learned about the gentle art of Jiujitsu from the sidelines, supporting not only the man I love but also the friends we made along the way.
Â
Most recently, I attended an event at Ayala Mall Circuit, where more than 500 Jiujitsu practitioners gathered to celebrate their hard-earned progress. Bruises, sweat, body aches, and even mental exhaustion all led to that day when they could reap the rewards of their hard work.
Once again, I found myself asking: What is it about this sport that makes people fall in love with it?
Â
1. A Newfound Family on the Mats
The kind of family you build through Jiujitsu is unbreakable, even though you're not connected by blood. Itâs the countless hours spent rolling on the mats, practicing techniques, sparring with teammates, failing, and learning together that creates a bond like no other. These shared experiences forge a family-like connection between practitioners.
Â
These are the people who will go through life with you, both on and off the mats. They inspire you to be better, will stick their neck out for you, and even answer your call at 2 AM when you need a friend the most. They become loved ones youâll hold onto for life.
2. A Path to Your Version 2.0
Beyond physical fitness, BJJ transforms your entire being. Iâve seen how it has shaped my husband into someone I deeply admire. This isnât the kind of growth you learn in school or the workplace. Each practice session teaches you to handle pressure and strengthens your mind, helping you overcome challenges in every area of your life.
Â
It teaches you to remain calm and composed under stress and humbles you in both victory and defeatânot just in the gym but in every part of life: at work, at home, everywhere. Imagine feeling frustrated countless times, yet still finding the resolve to show up again, calm and determined. Thatâs the version of yourself that Jiujitsu hones.
3. The Door is Open to Everyone
One of the most beautiful things about Jiujitsu is its inclusivity. It brings people together, regardless of age, gender, or body type. Jiujitsu is a shining example of how martial arts can truly be for everyone. Iâve seen how it makes everyone feel accepted and brings pure joy to those on the mat.
Â
At its core, Jiujitsu is about community. Teammates help one another improve by sharing knowledge and pushing each other to grow, whether youâre a beginner or a seasoned practitioner. This sense of belonging is inclusive, welcoming everyone with open arms. Some train for self-defense, others for competition, fitness, or personal growth. Regardless of the reason, the Jiujitsu community celebrates each personâs journey.
Â
As a spectator, BJJ never fails to amaze me. Watching it is like witnessing a beautiful, intricate dance of strategy and strength. I can only imagine how much more exciting it must be for those who actually step onto the mats, feeling the thrill of every move, the challenge of each roll, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with personal growth.
Note from Northsouth: Much gratitude to Rio Christine who is part of the Jiujitsu Family. You are awesome :)
The Origin of NorthSouth Fight Sports: "Where Discipline Breeds Greatness"
September 2024
The story of NorthSouth Fight Sports began during one of the most challenging periods in historyâthe 2020 pandemic. With gyms closed, we had to find creative ways to stay physically active and mentally sharp. Our solution was to transform our garage into a training space, laying down puzzle mats and inviting a small, close-knit group of jiujitsu teammates to join us. We named it "Garage Jiujitsu."
As time went on, we relocated our training sessions to another home, where we had access to high-quality mats, weights, and even a squat rack, creating the perfect environment for training. Our kids joined us as well, turning jiujitsu into a family activity that kept us all grounded. For two years, we maintained our training bubble, finding comfort in our small community and shared passion for the sport.
Then, during a casual training session, Coach Brendo shared his vision with the team: "To open a jiujitsu gym by 2025." What began as lighthearted banter has now become a reality with NorthSouth Fight Sports, a place where "Discipline Breeds Greatness."
Today, NorthSouth Fight Sports offers not only Jiujitsu but also Taekwondo, Zumba, Boxing, and Muay Thaiâproviding something for everyone, regardless of your fitness journey. One of our core missions is to prioritize Kidsâ Classes, aiming to develop young talent and instill the values of discipline and resilience.
If you're looking for a gym that fosters personal growth and community, where you can train in martial arts, build fitness, and help your kids become the best version of themselves, NorthSouth Fight Sports is the place to be.
Join us soon as we officially open and be part of this exciting journey where fitness, passion, and excellence come together.Â
